The good news: we handle the entire process for you. We pull the permit (with the City of Seattle inside city limits, or WA L&I in most surrounding cities), do the work to code, and meet the inspector. You don’t touch any paperwork.

For most homeowners a Level 2 (240V) charger is the right choice — it typically recharges an EV fully overnight. A hardwired unit (like the Tesla Wall Connector) gives the fastest home charging rates, the cleanest install, and is required for the highest amperages. A NEMA 14-50 outlet with a plug-in charger is more flexible — you can take the charger with you if you move. We’ll recommend the best fit based on your vehicle, driving habits, and panel capacity.
Common signs of an outdated system: two-prong ungrounded outlets, no GFCI protection in kitchens and bathrooms, a fuse box or a panel over ~25 years old, knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring, frequently tripping breakers, flickering lights, or warm outlets. The reliable way to know is a professional electrical inspection — we check the panel, wiring, grounding, and protection devices, and give you a prioritized list of what (if anything) actually needs attention.
Consider an upgrade if your panel is under 200 amps and you’re adding an EV charger, heat pump, or major appliance; if breakers trip regularly; if the panel is a recalled brand (Federal Pacific, Zinsco); or if it’s simply decades old. A modern panel adds capacity for today’s all-electric loads and improves safety. We always run a load calculation first — sometimes a smaller solution (load management or a subpanel) is all you need, and we’ll tell you honestly.
Washington does allow homeowners to do some electrical work on their own primary residence with a homeowner’s permit and inspection — but in practice, mistakes are dangerous and expensive: fire risk, failed inspections, insurance problems, and trouble when selling the home. Anything involving the panel, new circuits, or 240V should be done by a licensed electrician. A good rule of thumb: swapping a light fixture on an existing box is reasonable DIY territory; for anything beyond that, calling us costs less than repairing DIY damage.
