What to Expect in an Installation


  • The battery unit(s) are mounted near your main service panel or other suitable location (outdoor or indoor depending on model).
  • The system may require panel upgrades or additional sub-panel installations if you intend full whole-home backup and have heavy loads (HVAC, EV charger, etc). For example, even systems like the Powerwall may need panel/service upgrades in older homes.  
  • The system wiring will include automatic transfer equipment (ATS) or switching devices so that when the grid goes down, the system detects it and transitions to battery-backup mode seamlessly.

Q: Can I install a battery backup without solar?

Yes — many homeowners choose battery backup purely for outage protection. The systems we recommend (FranklinWH, Tesla) can charge from the grid and discharge when needed. For example, the FranklinWH system can charge from the grid, solar, or generator.  


Q: Will my whole home be backed up?

Possibly — it depends on your home’s load, number of battery units, panel capacity, and design. We’ll assess your usage and recommend how many units and what equipment is needed to back up your entire home vs only essential circuits.


Q: What if I have a large HVAC system, EV charger, etc?
